Short links and analytics: track campaigns clearly
Good practices for traceable links, understandable reports and organized campaigns.
A short link is easier to share, but its campaign value comes from organization and correct interpretation. A click total alone does not show whether the same person opened several times or whether the destination generated the expected action.
Before creating a link, define the question you want to answer. That decision guides campaign naming, parameters and the metric you will compare later.
Give each link context
Record channel, campaign, creative and date. A name such as “tiktok-background-july-video2” is more useful than “new link.” Create separate links for separate posts when you want to compare formats.
Do not reuse one link for unrelated campaigns. Mixed history becomes difficult to interpret. When the destination changes, note the date so periods are not compared as if they were equivalent.
Total clicks are not unique visitors
Total clicks count recorded openings. Unique visitors attempt to group visits that appear to belong to one person or device. Neither measure is perfect: app previews, privacy protection and network changes can affect the numbers.
Treat metrics as comparable signals rather than absolute identification. Review trend, source, period and the result at the destination. A link with fewer clicks may bring more interested visitors.
Use campaign parameters consistently
UTM parameters help analytics tools identify source, medium and campaign. Use a consistent lowercase naming standard. “tiktok,” “TikTok” and “tik_tok” may appear as different sources.
Build the full URL before shortening and open it in a private window. Confirm that parameters remain in the address and keep a record connecting every short link to its destination.
Protect privacy and redirect trust
A short link hides the destination, so trust depends on context. Use a recognizable domain, a clear description and a secure page. Never change a published link to unexpected content.
Collect only the data needed to evaluate the campaign and describe measurement in the privacy policy. Access data should have a clear purpose, retention period and suitable protection.
Final checklist
- Create separate links for relevant channels or creatives.
- Standardize campaign names and parameters.
- Test redirects on mobile and in a private window.
- Compare clicks with actions completed at the destination.
- Document the measurement purpose and respect privacy.
